As you read through the SAKLC personalized travel brochure and prayerfully consider joining me on this journey, keep the following important points in mind:

  • To secure the stateroom category of your choice – and to ensure that there is a place for you on the boat – you must register and pay a deposit as soon as possible. Other payments will be spread over the next several months and into 2027, but only a deposit secures your place and your preference.
  • You may book your own flights, or book them through Educational Opportunities Tours (EO) our tour company. If an SAKLC group files together through EO, I will fly with them.
  • The Luther tour will be led by a professional, German-speaking guide, and I will provide additional teaching and spiritual guidance along the way. The river cruise offers several sightseeing programs at each destination (see brochure for details) or you may explore on your own. Throughout the tour and the cruise, I will offer prayer and worship opportunities, and we will celebrate Holy Communion together.

  • While we share the beautiful AmaViola with other cruisers, the Luther tour is a private SAKLC tour. We will have our own bus with on-board facilities.
  • If you are in need of a roommate, let me know, as I can help connect single travelers.
  • It is the nature of international touring that for pricing and logistical reasons we are required to have a minimum and maximum number of travelers. For the Luther tour, a minimum of 20 travelers secures our private tour bus, which has a seating capacity of 35. The river cruise costs are based upon a minimum of 30 travelers, with available staterooms dictating the maximum number. I appreciate your understanding as we work within those margins.
  • Participation in the Luther add-on is optional while the cruise is a required component of the tour.
  • Travel insurance is strongly recommended. EO offers insurance coverage, but you are free to secure your own.

Reformation Pre-Tour

Begin your Rhine River Cruise experience with a meaningful pre-tour following the path of Martin Luther and the Reformation. From Berlin to Wittenberg, Eisleben, Erfurt, Eisenach, and Heidelberg, this journey brings history and faith to life as we visit the places where Luther lived, preached, struggled, and helped shape the future of the church.

BERLIN

Begin your journey in Berlin, where history, faith, and resilience intersect. Tour iconic landmarks including the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate, Charlottenburg Palace, Victory Column, and Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. This symbolic church, preserved after World War II, stands as a powerful reminder of reconciliation, peace, and the enduring Christian witness in modern Germany.

WITTENBERG

In Wittenberg, we trace the life and work of Martin Luther. Highlights include the Castle Church, where he posted the 95 Theses in 1517, the City Church where Luther and his associates preached, and the Lutherhalle Museum, his former home with Katharina and center of Reformation history.

EISLEBEN

In Eisleben, we visit the city where Martin Luther’s life both began and ended. Here he was born, baptized, and later died. The houses connected to his birth and death offer a meaningful glimpse into his personal story and the lasting impact of his Reformation legacy.

ERFURT

In Erfurt, we explore the spiritual home of Martin Luther and visit the Augustinian Monastery, where he lived as a monk. We also see the Franciscan Church, where Luther preached in 1529, and St. Mary’s Church, where he was ordained, connecting us deeply to his faith journey.

EISENACH

In Eisenach, we visit Wartburg Castle, one of Germany’s most important Reformation sites. Here, Martin Luther found refuge after the Diet of Worms and translated the New Testament into German. The castle offers powerful history, beautiful views, and a deeper connection to Luther’s faith, courage, and lasting legacy.

COBURG

In Coburg, we visit the impressive Veste Coburg, one of Germany’s largest castle complexes. Martin Luther stayed here in 1530 while under imperial ban and continued his important work on the German Bible translation. The fortress offers a powerful connection to Reformation history and Luther’s enduring spiritual legacy.

NÜRMBERG

Discover the impressive history of Bavaria’s second-largest city while enjoying the energy of a vibrant urban destination. A walk through the Old Town reveals a beautiful blend of historic landmarks and modern architecture, showing how tradition and contemporary life come together in one lively and fascinating place.

HEIDELBERG

In Heidelberg, we explore the charming old town, known for its romantic streets, historic architecture, and lively squares. Nestled along the Neckar River, the city offers beautiful views, centuries of history, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Highlights include the famous castle ruins, the Old Bridge, and picturesque lanes filled with character.

BASEL

Basel, Switzerland, is a vibrant cultural hub on the Rhine River where Switzerland, France, and Germany meet. Known for its rich art scene and medieval charm, highlights include the red-sandstone Town Hall in Marktplatz and Kunstmuseum Basel, the world’s oldest public art museum.
